Of late, I have been asking by numerous people to explain the difference between six sigma and lean six sigma. I thought for a while that it would be more beneficial to share my views with a detailed note on both six sigma and lean six sigma. I hope this article will be helpful for those who are looking for Six Sigma Vs Lean Six Sigma.

Basically, both Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma are organizational improvement programs. They differ in approach and in the ultimate goals sought. We would differentiate in terms of cost, implementation, and effectiveness.


Six Sigma Lean Six Sigma
 1. Team uses a methodology called DMAIC. – Determine, Measure, Analyze, Implement, and Control. 1. Team uses “Knowledge Creation” method through short learning cycle that helps reveal problems and solutions through observation.
2. The Six Sigma methodology is a quality tool that emphasizes reducing the number of errors in a process. 2. Lean Six Sigma is a methodology that combines process speed with quality.
3 It focuses on identifying variation in the types of data inputs. 3. Lean, itself, focuses on speed. It emphasizes reducing the amount of time between activities, events, and cycles.  The shorter the cycle time, the more cycles one can complete in a given amount of time.
4. It simply completes activities rapidly, without check marks fosters an environment prone to errors and often requires rework. This is where Six Sigma becomes essential to business process management. 4. Lean promotes rapid business processes the problem that arises from it is a lack of quality. It doesn’t matter how many forms are completed or calls are taken if the data and information captured is not up to par
5. It is a statistical methodology for improvement and focuses on eliminating variation 5. Lean focuses on continuous improvement while demonstrating respect for people. It is about delivering value in the eyes of the customer through the unremitting efforts to eliminate waste.
6. It tends to be a push approach 6. It requires employee engagement, continuous learning and employee empowerment.

Together Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma work through process mapping to model and automate the most efficient, quality workflows possible, allowing organizations to maximize productivity, while eliminating waste and reducing costs.
